Do I Need to Buy Minecraft Again for Windows 10 to Play With Friends on Console

You can share games and subscriptions  with family members or friends using the home Xbox feature. The  link explaining that is here

The minute you add another console and play simultaneously you both need your own subscriptions and copy of the game. The home Xbox feature only shares stuff on one console. Your designated home Xbox console.

Cross play is for specific games like Fortnite and Minecraft.  The feature isn't meant to share games it's to be able to play games together on different consoles and devices. Regardless of them being from different manufacturers.

It sounds like all you need to do is be designated as the home Xbox and then have your son play on the console. While you play on the PC. That would be the best way to play together with the one copy.

Thank you for both replies.  One thing that confuses me as you both state I need to set one xbox as home...…   I only have one xbox, the other device is PC.   So to play together set the xbox as the 'home' even though its the only one in the house?  then "join" that from the win 10 pc.

does that make sense?

The Home setting is what allows you to share games with other accounts on your console. If you buy Minecraft for the Xbox on your account, you would need to set the console as your Home so your son can play it from there. Or you would need to buy it on your son's account and then you don't have to worry about the Home setting.

Hey FucStic,

Thank you for reaching out. Disregard anything having to do with the "home console" feature. This is only required when dealing with more than one console. You should be able to play using the PC/Xbox One as long as you have both versions of the game which it seems like you do. :D

So the Windows 10 PC version of Minecraft is a separate "license" from the version on the console.  In other words, yes, you will need to purchase the game twice if you want to play it on console and you want to play on PC (there is actually about 7 versions, there is also Android, iOS, Kindle, Gear VR, and Nintendo Switch).  All of the versions can play on-line together.  But each version requires a separate purchase to use.

Once you have the game loaded, the second tab is for "join".  As long as you are friends with your son's profile on xbox, if one of you has a world launched, the other account should see the ability to "join" from the menu.  See below

You need to purchase Minecraft on the console also. Minecraft is not a playanywhere title which allows you to pay once and play on PC and console.

Once you have purchased Minecraft on the console you would need to add your sons account as a friend and then you can invite him to a game or vice versa.

The realms subscription is not required unless youu want to host a persistent world that you or your son can join aty any time

You will need to own a copy on both devices to be able to play together.

Windows 10 will only work on PC as it is not a play anywhere title.

Xbox one will need to have the bedrock edition of the game to be able to play crossplay with Mobile, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
